Performance Panic Sets In. Is This You?

The minutes or seconds before an important presentation or performance can be nerve-wracking.

This is most definitely outside your comfort zone. But to be fair, ‘twas ever thus. Some in-advance anxiety or nerves are completely normal and could even give you an edge. Most of us experience that uneasy, creeping angst when faced with the expectations of an audience. Afterwards, you may even feel that it’s a job well done.

Being nervous is okay. Normal, you could say. However, here’s the main thing. It’s a question of degree, or extremity.

What you’re experiencing aren’t “normal” nerves.

Your heart pounds, and crucially, your breathing becomes fast and shallow. The thought of playing, speaking or presenting has become petrifying. You simply can’t do it. The world doesn’t feel safe.

For whatever reason, you’re wracked with anxiety, chronic stress, trauma or even going through depression.

Balance Your Stress Response System

The truth is, you deserve to thrive and life doesn’t have to be like this.

I conquered my own extreme fears of playing in public with this wonderful technique. Like everything in life, it will take some practice, but you can do it, too. The difference could be life-changing.

Welcome to the science of Coherent Breathing, which I’d be delighted to help you achieve. In other words, a way to feel calmer – much calmer, and more in control of your body’s response to pressure and nerves.

Breath-Body-Mind Coaching in Sussex: What Is It?

Breath-Body-Mind (BBM)™ and Coherent Breathing are scientifically-proven ways to improve well-being and reduce stress. As its name suggests, it’s centred around your breathing. BBM™ has practices drawn from yoga, qi gong and martial arts, and has been extensively researched and developed.

I highly recommend it and as mentioned, I know it works.

BBM affects the Autonomic Nervous System

What’s that? Well, your ANS is the command centre in your brain. Imagine a computer server; it’s a bit like that. Your ANS divides into two:

  • The sympathetic nervous system (SNS): your body’s accelerator.
  • The parasympathetic nervous system (PNS): your body’s brake.

Feeling anxious? Your SNS fires up, delivering the well-known flight or fight response. Calming down? Your PNS takes over and rough seas find quieter waters.

The problem? Your SNS can’t distinguish between real or imagined threat. This is why we respond with such intense feelings of terror when faced with performance situations. Our brain literally interprets them as a threat to our lives.

Slowing Down Your Sympathetic Nervous System

Most likely, your triggered SNS means breathing from your chest, which won’t help you at all.

I’ll teach you how to breathe to your stomach, which will help you better manage your anxiety. The average breathing rate for an adult is 12-20 breaths per minute; the target for Coherent Breathing is 5. Here, we’re slowing right down, practising and getting it right.

Coherent breathing aims to increase your resilience to stress and improve your mental focus and energy. It could also be your key to regulating your emotions, providing the support and encouragement you need to perform at your best.
